Dear Dad 3.14.21 Truman

Sorry about your fall. Glad you didn’t sustain a significant injury. I guess you are getting around a bit slowly for a few days. I am getting around somewhat slowly myself for at least a couple more days. Hopefully, I will get rid of my catheter and bag with my clinic visit this week and return to normal.

I sent you a book about Truman a few days ago. If my calculations are correct, you enlisted in the Navy before Roosevelt died and must have served most of your time under Truman as President. I am wondering what the sailors thought of Truman and if the opinions changed after the bomb was dropped. I think generally as we look back; most think the atomic bomb shouldn’t have been used. But, I bet most everyone agreed with using it at the time it was deployed. The book is very interesting, I think you will enjoy it.

Nancy and I are thinking of a road trip to NW Arkansas. Maybe we will also venture a few miles more into Kansas and visit the Truman Library. We both read the Truman book and it piqued our interest in Truman’s life.

I have been talking to the kids about planting some fruit trees at Paluxy. Hopefully, I will recover enough to help soon. Probably we will plant a few trees under the hill from your house a few more in the crooked bottom. We will be asking for your observations of what you have seen grow the best over the years. There is an old proverb (Chinese I think) that says something like this — The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The next best time is now.

See you soon. Be careful and keep walking.
